A dry cooling towers is just an aircooled heat exchanger: a fan blows ambient air along finned pipes through which the medium that needs to be cooled flows.

It is like the radiator in a car: air cools circulating water/glycol which then cools the engine.

Erica,

Also there are dry cooling towers working with natural draft in which warm air inside a tall tower tends to go up hence cold air will be sucked inside through the finned tubes containing the media which intended to be cooled.

By googling you will get many texts/articles/papers explaining about the dry cooling towers in detail..
