Steam Methane Reforming

Hi,

I am trying to simulate steam methane reforming in hysys and read some articles.

From articles, I found out that reforming reaction(CH4 + H2O ==> CO + 3H2) is modeled as coversion reactor in hysys, and water gas shaft reaction(CO + H2O ==> CO2 + H2) is modeled as equilibrium reactor in hysys.

So I am wondering how it can be determined whether equilibrium reactor or conversion reactor is utilized.

It could be silly quesiton, but please shed me light.

For a new design you should model both reactions as equilibrium reactions.

 

Each reaction has an Approach To Equilibrium (ATE). Read my expanations about that in another topic:

For modeling the performance of an existing unit for which you have detailed analysis of reformer inlet and outlet compositions you can either model as equilibrium reaction and adjust ATE to get actual operation result, or model as a conversion reaction specifying actual conversions calculated from actual compositions.
