Hi,

I need help in designing a small scale ethanol distillation column. I'm not sure on what steps and calculations to follow. I have only decided to use valve trays. It would be a great help if someone could guide me on how to do the design calculations.

Hello Bobby,

 

I apologize if I have asked somewhat of a broad question. I'm already familiar with most of the design calculations. I've used the McCabe-Thiele's method to find the number of stages (trays) required, the diameter of the column using the input flowrate of steam from the reboiler and i'm in the stage of slightly modifying the valve tray design to fit this system setting.

For me to run a simulation of ChemCAD, I need to know certain parameters such as the operating pressures of the input feed and inside the column (top and bottom), the flowrates (feed and downcomer) and the reflux ratio. It would be a great deal of help if someone could provide me an idea about this and if there are more necessary calculations to be made.

Unless you have a very big laboratory, valve trays are not a good choice.  It would probably be better to use a packed column.

 

It is not possible to use the McCabe-Thiele method unless you have already specified the pressure and reflux ratio.
