Hello everyone. I have a horizontal storage tank carrying high level liquid waste which produces a certain amount of constant heat due to decay. The liquid waste occupies 80% of the total volume and needs to be maintained at 50 degree©. I want to design a cooling coil whose inlet and outlet water temperatures are known. The tank dimensions, dirt factor and pipe diameter is known. How do I calculate the length of piping required and transient heat analysis when cooling water is cut off and is resumed.

The heat transfer when water is flowing is easy.  You need to calculate the heat transfer coefficients on either side (hi and ho) in order to get a U value.  You will also need to assume the fouling factors.  Then it is a simple (Q = UA∆T) calculation to get surface area.    Any heat transfer textbook lays this out.

The transient case is more difficult. You could do this stepwise in a spreadsheet or MathCAD, but it becomes very involved.  An FEA/CFD model would be more accurate.
