One of our clients has a ASME Section VIII, Consolidated model 19567 (area 0.567 in2) with metal seat, liquid trim (capacity of 31 gpm water), and 150 psig set pressure in their boneyard; is it legal to change the valve to steam trim and reduce the set pressure to 75 psig (it would be put onto a vessel in steam service with MAWP of 75 psig)? I know the cost savings won't be significant, but they want to anyway.

If you want one of us to verify such then you will be taking a big risk. You should first consult your supervisor or management. I would not do such a thing ever. And I advise you not to take on such a risk either.

Bobby, thank you for your response. I agree with you. Do you know of somewhere this is written in the codes or standards so they don't go down that path? Sadly, often I tell clients that I would not recommend something, but they will only listen if I have a known industrial reference...

Just request that they give you a directive in writing. Or, offer to research the issue at their cost. You are probably dealing with a member of the client's team, not necessarily the client.  And kick it upstairs. I refused client request many times.

First of all I agree with Bobby on this one. First contact your supervisor on manager on this one. Second, if they approve I recommend to contact Consolidated directly. They usually answer quickly.
