It looks like a standard Carnot cycle type homework problem. We are not opposed to helping students with homework, but you cannot just post the problem statement and expect us to do your homework for you (My mentor used to hate when I asked him some kind of "how do I solve this" question -- he would send me back and tell me to come up with something that he could critique). My recommendations at this point:

 

1) Teach us what you know about Carnot cycles (both to help us remember for ourselves, and so we can see what you have learned). That will get us all on the same page as far as expectations for the problem.

2) Work up as much of the solutions as you can, and present your proposed solutions for critique. That will allow us to see the parts you are misunderstanding. You can identify the steps or parts that completely confuse you so we can help you understand those.

 

We will be happy to help as best we can, but we need you to do more than just post the problem statement.

You are right in stating this problem "is very important".   I'm sure all our senior members agree on that judgment.  I have changed the title of this thread to reflect what the topic is - not what its importance means to you.

 

Shorty is exactly right in his experienced comments.  This is a typical problem straight out of Thermodynamics.  The Carnot cycle has to be fully understood together with its related equations and theory basis derived using the theory of what constitutes a Thermo cycle.  If you are having trouble with Thermo, welcome to engineering!  We of the old school know the feeling very well!

 

You need to hit the basic theory and Thermo logic regarding the cycle until you fully understand what it represents and why you can derive the equations needed.  You must fully understand what the curves on a Pressure-Volume Diagram representing the closed cycle mean and what is theoretically happening (with no Entropy generated ---- and why this is so.).  There is a ton of information on the Carnot Cycle on the internet - besides your Thermo Textbook.  When you have fully comprehended what the cycle is and how it works, start to resolve the problem.  Write all your steps down, in an algorithm manner, and submit the work to our Forum, noting the parts that you are having trouble understanding or working out.  Don't just submit a copy of the problem given to you.  Our members will help --- but as Shorty has pointed out, they will not do your work for you.

 

We know that Thermo is tough.  But it is part of the price that you must pay to become a graduate engineer.
