is it normal practice to install a restriction orifice upstream or downstream of a valve to flare? any preference on reasons why?
Upstream or downstream of which valve?
If to be installed downstream of a valve, say a BDV, it's placed there to control the flow toward flare...

i have a blowdown valve and then an isolation ball valve to flare. yes the RO will be placed downstream of the blowdown valve, but in regards to the isolation valve, should the RO be placed downstream or upstream of the isolation valve? are there maintenance concerns w/ RO?

It is normally placed upstream of the isolation valve mostly due to necessity of RO maintenance/replacement...
