Hello, 

I am currently working on a gel system that is required to hold metal powder in suspension without separating. 

The solvent I have chosen is Xylene with carbopol as a thickener and polyvinyl butyral. 

The gel systems seem to be forming well, but once mixed with metal powder, I obtain separation over a 12 hour period. 

Any ideas on how to hold the powder in suspension? 

I should also note that the gel/powder system cannot be too thick, as it need to be able to flow under 30psi pressure.

Hello JN, 

 

You could try and estimate the settling velocity using the formula of Stokes law for settling velocity.  This probably assumes a spherical particle and all particles the same, and newtonian viscosity fluid.  Your particles may be too heavy ie too large or too smooth and round.

 

Also, keeping the gel cooler may help, keeps the viscosity higher and density higher.
