Batch process.

An oil and water mixture is settled in a settling tank. Oil and water phases are separated in this tank. Tank has only one outlet at the bottom DN 50. 

bottom is elliptical type. a sight glass is on the outlet pipe, half meter away from the outlet. Operator looks at the sight glass, when he sees the phase change, he closes the outlet valve. 

 

In order to make separation more accurate, a suggestion is to simply replace the sight glass with conductivity sensor and outlet valve is controlled by the sensor.

 

In my opinion, the bottom of the tank is also needed to be modified to cone type and conductivity sensor is installed very close to the outlet. 

 

Anyone has some experiences with this kind of operation?

Hi Rikakose,

 

A few thoughts:

 

• A cone type bottom will have less storage volume.
• Watch out in case the conductivity probe will be prone to being covered with oil.
• Find out the response time of the conductivity probe.
• Consider whether you may get a thick emulsion layer at the oil and water interface. If so it acts like a third fluid.

What is being described is a typical standard product commonly used in the industry for many decades, known as an Oil Water Separator (OWS).

I'm not sure there is a need to reinvent the wheel on this. Perhaps if you want to know good, reputable OWS suppliers, I can suggest to you.

I wouldn't suggest to trial and error a well known, established, commonplace product such as an OWS unless you are already experiencing problems with it. Although, you can get better support from the supplier himself.
