Good day

I have some problem in my current project. Project background is to transfer 40 T/H of ethylene liquid (-104 oC) for 5 km pipeline to jetty. Towards the end of the pipeline, it is required to have a chiller in order to get back the temperature to -104 oC. What we need is a totally independent chiller to chill down ethylene liquid from -70 to go back -104 oC temperature. But then, it is very hard to find the independent refrigeration package supplier. I already talked to few gas specialty main player in the world and they are looks like cannot provide the complete refrigeration package with chiller. I am not sure whether they cannot or they not interested for that small scale refrigeration package. So, I would like to get suggestion:

1. is it possible to get standalone refrigeration package and HEX to chill down ethylene liquid from -70 to -104 oC?

2. If yes, what would be typical refrigeration vendor for me to contact?

Some other information as below:

• Process fluid – pure ethylene 99.9%

• Chilling medium – to be proposed

• Process inlet / outlet temperature – minus 70 degC / minus 104 degC

• Process inlet / outlet pressure – 5.3 barg / 4.8 barg

• Process mass flow – 40 tph

• Heat exchange duty – 300 kW

• Heat exchanger type – to be proposed

• Refrigeration system type – to be proposed

your feedback is highly appreciated.

Hi

In my opinion

Chilling medium: Propylene

HEX type: Coil wound heat exchanger

Refrigeration system: Mixed refrigeration system

thanks

Thanks raman for the feedback. I don't think it is that simple.. I am looking for a vendor who can give performance guarantee

You will require a cascade unit. Using ethylene and propane or propylene. You will have to go to a packager to supply a system. I don't know who you can contact, but I suggest you start with Chart. They can probably give you several sources. Are you really going to build this system? One might also go to a small engineering company for such a system.

Thanks bobby for feedback.

start with chart? what you mean sir. yes, i need the independent chilling system/skid in order to cool down back the ethylene liquid.

Chart Industries is a US company. And, you may find it more cost effective to send vapor ethylene to the jetty area and provide condensing/cooling facilities there. You don't seem to have thought the project through. Or have any idea what it would cost.

Dear bobby,

i will try communicate with Chart Industries. any others vendor please inform me.

regarding cost, we already study on the costing wise and already have some figure. we have to study from available books regarding to chilling system especially on the LNG system, look at the equipment (s) i.e compressor, refrigeration (proprietary  item), licensing cost, and some margin and contingency. It would be the most costly item in the system. perhaps 40-50% of the total project cost.

Hi Farid ,

You may talk to Carrier, York or German companies  about your project .

Good luck

York or Johnson control already in radar. Carrier can try. Thanks for the feedback

What are you going to do when you are not loading ethylene? How are you going to cool down the pipeline and ship? There are many things to consider. All of the systems that I am aware of use condensing and cooling at the loading location. Yours will be a first if you proceed. My guess is that you can't get a high enough price for ethylene to justify this system.

Dear bobby.

We have 2 big tanks here in different processing plant. We need to tranfer from plant 1 to plant 2 where it is located to nearby berth. We will not transfer direct to ship. During normal, we will transfer continuously 24/7 in order to keep the line chill. We call it chilling mode. And during ship ready, we will transfer rated mode (bigger capacity). All this thing has been study in term or potential tank top, overall mass balance etc. We also willing to build a new ethylene double wall tank if required.

In term of economic wise.. As of now it is justified. Just that to get stand alone refrigeration system pricing and hoping it will as per our expectation in term of technical and also price

You won't have any problem finding suppliers from whom you can solicit quotes. The problems are with the 5 km insulated line. If the line is not properly installed, you will have problems forevermore. I presume the line will be buried. Like I mentioned, if this is the case, yours will be the first, with all the associated risks. I still strongly recommend that you reconsider sending vapor at ambient temperature. Any risk associated with this are well known.

Bobby
