Hi all,

I have the following query.

I have a jacketed reactor (25m3) which is heated by directly charging steam into the jacket.

The steam is supplied by an external supplier that feeds several companies at a specific specification,

'Low Pressure Steam - saturated 2.15barg / 135oC.

The reactor involves heating its contents to 125oC and involves ammonia gas release above 75oC.

This takes 8 hours to achieve due to the vessel being heat transfer limited and due to the gas release and solvent reflux from the condenser.

My query is as follows:- is there a way to increase the steam pressure/temperature of this steam if I have no access to higher pressure steam?

Compressor etc?

Kind Regards

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

You might have more than six options to increase the productivity as follows:

i) Let one of the steam suppliers to raise the supply pressure at a negligible cost impact,

ii) Install a steam boosting blower to raise the pressure,

iii) Install an additional reactor to save the time for preheating by operating in parallel,

iv) Install a additional heatexchanger with circulation pump to increase the surface area externally,

v) Insert an internal heating coil to increase the surface area internally

vi) Provide a vacuum pump to remove the vapor at the lower temperature,

...

Any of the above may help,

Thank you sgkim for your detailed reply:

i) Let one of the steam suppliers to raise the supply pressure at a negligible cost impact,

Not feasible as there are several users on-site that use the steam. Changing it would require extensive process risk assessments across every user.

ii) Install a steam boosting blower to raise the pressure,

This sounds interesting. Are they commonly installed? Are people's experience of them, reliability/robustness, positive?

iii) Install an additional reactor to save the time for preheating by operating in parallel,

A consideration but lack of space and capital cost make this less attractive.

iv) Install a additional heatexchanger with circulation pump to increase the surface area externally,

Good suggestion. The material has a ph of <1 so we would need to install exotic materials but definitely going to be considered.

v) Insert an internal heating coil to increase the surface area internally

Similar to above, although we have more experience of using external heating loops vs internal coils.

vi) Provide a vacuum pump to remove the vapor at the lower temperature,

Fair suggestion too.

Thank you for your response :)
