Dear All,

I am new to refinery plants, and I would like to know, impact of high water content in the hydrocarbon feed to the Diesel and Vaccum gas oil hydrotreating unit,

One thing is very clear for us, every time water comes along with feed, we observe spike in pressure in our feed surge drum whose pressure is 3kgf/cm2 and temperature is 200 degree centigrade. Water is getting boiled and causing pressure rise.

I just want to know, what would be the affect if the water is carried to the hydrotreating and hydrocracking reactors, for reactor catalyst, reactions in the catalyst, temperature and pressure profile in the reactor? Thank you.

Water in the feed to a hydrotreater isn't a huge problem - you are seeing the pressure spikes because the water is vapourizing.

Water in the feed to a hydrotreater CAN make another problem worse, however.  If your feed or makeup gas contain halides (chloride, bromide, fluorides), then water increases the humidity in the effluent system vapours and increases the chance of having wet salt deposition in the effluent system if the operating temperature falls below the temperatures defined in API 932B before effective water wash.  This has led to a number of catastrophic failures in effluent trains ahead of the water wash injection when plants either ran colder than design or with halides being undetected.

There are following effects effects of water on hydrotreating units;
