Hi there,

 

I am designing a desulphurisation unit composed of a hydrogenation reactor followed by two Zinc Oxide fixed bed reactors (1 operating and 1 regenerating).

I have the following feed composition:

90 % CH4, 4.5 % C2H6, 1 % C3H8, 0.45 % C4H10, 0.2 % C5H12, 0.9 % CO2, 2.95 % N2 and a maximum sulphur content of 50 mg/Nm3.
 
At present I have assumed the sulphur content is 5 mg/m3 is H2S and the remainder is mercaptan (CH4S).

 

How should I go about calculating the amount of hydrogen required to recycle to the hydrogenator? 

 

I know 100 % of the mercaptan will react but I am unsure which other reaction will take place.

You will consume an equimolar amount of H2 to the RSH molecules.  With a hydrotreating catalyst, no other reactions should occur.  But you will need an excess of H2 to ensure you get a full reaction.  It is best to ask your catalyst supplier how much.
