I need to size a slug catcher based on the slugs that will be generated through a 70 km 12 inch diameter pipeline which comprises mostly light gas and water. Hysys steady state simulations show slugs of 40-80 m along the length of the pipe. I am trying to estimate the slug catcher volume by computing the volume of the longest slug. Is this the correct way of calculating slug catcher volume? Or I need to add up all slug volumes along the pipe to determine slug catcher size.

Additionally, steady state simulations are not good for estimating pigging slugs and turn-up slugs. what is the closest i can get with steady state simulation results?

You can't expect to properly size a slug catcher using HYSYS. You need to enlist the service of a professional who can properly size a slug catcher for you. That, of course, requires someone who has access to OLGA or similar software. And proper experience.

we are in the process to acquire PIPESIM. initially i wanted to understand what HYSYS can do for me (steady state and dynamic) and provide me with preliminary results. I wish someone can provide me with input on HYSYS results interpretation and highlight the limitations of HYSYS results. I will have professional help, as i will be showing my working to my senior engineers. but i need to show my initial working before their input.

You are wasting your time trying to use HYSYS. And you can't provide any reliable design with your limited experience. I am not familiar with PIPESIM, but I don't recall that it is used for estimating slugs in pipelines.

It is far more complex, and Bobby is right - don't use HYSYS to estimate slug lengths.  OLGA should be used.  Also, you need to know the layout of the pipeline, because that may be more important than the "steady state" slug volumes, especially if flowing over hills.
