Dear all,

What would be your recommendation in order to follow up a cooling tower performances ?What are the key parameters to measure in order to evaluate its performance over time ?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Sincerely,

Fred

You must periodically measure the variables from which you can calculate performance. I recall decades ago there was a cooling tower institute. You should check it out.

Hi,

Let you try the search engine in this forum , a lot of information have been posted .

You should get good input from the vendor of chemicals in charge of the treatment  for your cooling tower(s) , he should perform regular checks and provide a report about the quality of the treatment and give advices ( monthly basis) .

https://www.suezwate...g-water-systems

a few tips :

*make sure the distribution of water on the packing is good ( visual inspection)

*install a corrosion rack to ensure the treatment is good for all metallurgy ( supplied by chemicals treatment vendor)

* During turn around inspect a critical HX to ensure the chemical treatment is performing well ( no deposit, no corrosion ), Chemicals vendor  should widness the operation .

* check regularly the vibrations of the fan(s) , good to have a 24h monitoring

* make sure the louvers are working well to prevent loss of water

* Good to have strainer(s)at the suction of the pump(s) to prevent cloggage of line ,HX , regular check is a must to mitigate the risk of cavitation.

* Good to filtrate  the cooling water to remove dirt, pollens, .... (side stream filtration) , depends very much of your location

* Winterization , good to have a by pass line to return part of the water to the basin to prevent freezing .

* Good to have a VFD to adjust the RPM of the fan(s) to save energy .

* Let you put in place a performances contract with the company in charge of the treament : number of cycles , chemicals usage , corrosion  (mils/year) ,number of visits per year ,...)

Don't forget to ask for a regular check of Legionella !  Chemals supplier should offer it .

Hope this is helping you , better if you have specific requests.
