Hello all,

I've some question about evaluating a HE shell & tube within the flow & temperature of cooling medium is unknown. So, how we know that the heat transfer is efficient ? The fluid is Waste Oil & cooling medium is cooling water. May you guys have the reference / calculation to solve it. Thank You.

Best regards,

Abyadh

You must know the cooling water flow and inlet temperature. Otherwise you are out of luck.

Oke sir i know the flow of cooling water also the temperature. But the problem is the fluid is oil sir which is clogging into the HE, so what do you suggest on sir?

If you're looking for clogging in the HE, first check the pressure drop history  data for this equipment, it will show you .. If you haven't, measure it.... compare with the design data sheet.

There are other ways to see if the HE is clogged...
- drop of flow  oil waste side,
- increase of inlet pressure in this line..

To evaluate the heat transfer, is needed to have flow rates, temperature changes and the date sheet of the equipment.. otherwise we will be guessing.

Thank you Mr. Torres,

Actually for the flow rates, temperature and specific design equipment states on my database.

But the problem now is how to calculate flow optimum and know how much the waste oil will be form to clogging.

Hi,

I am sorry to say, but your question is not clear. First you talk about temperature of cooling medium and then clogging.

Anyway, Clogging / Fouling can happen in the HE due to various reasons

1) Low velocities of fluid

2) High temperature

3) Inappropriate selection of tube diameter, sometimes it is better to go for 1" tubes rather than 3/4", this enables good cleaning.

If you can be clear with your question you might get a better answer. You can also google about fouling of heat ex and you will get 'n' number of articles.

Revert in case of any query.

Regards,

Sr Adyadh

If you have a HE with deficiencies of heat transfer, it will be difficult to get optimum flow.  Your plant has to deal with it until the next general maintenance..
