Hi Fellas,

 

Does anyone have an idea about a Refinery currently/ still operating without a desalter unit?

Much interested to know about their operation and how are they tackle the overhead corrosion issues?

The refineries must have a desalter in the inlet feed stream.

Historically that wasn't always the case as there were/are crudes that were salt free.

Hi,

 

In general, the crude oil receives by refining process plant is normally salt free despite of desalter unit included in refining installation or the crude oil has already been desalted somewhere else...

Thanks dear for your response!, yes it is true that there could be refiners do exists, who process salt free crudes, any idea of such refineries??

In the unit where I work still has salts varies from 4 to 35 PTB (which is already settled and drained from the source and from the refinery tanks) and have no desalters. We are facing quite a lot of challenges with the overhead corrosion. Overhead sour water chlorides goes up to 1000 ppm (as NaCl)  :wacko:

 

That is why interested to know about any other refinery operating in similar set up to knew much about their operation

Hi,

 

From the salt content range (4 to 35 PTB) a part, say, 4 to 10 PTB is a proper range above which the downstream facilities will go to trouble in corrosion standpoint, Hence, i guess the crude oil you are discussing about, is probably under desalting process at upstream facilities without any effective control for its salt content leading to receive off spec crude oil from upstream desalter output.
