Dear all memebers,

i am working on the validation of the design part of the overhead condensor of the batch reactor, can anyone pl. guide me on the designing part of the condensor , any literature, guidance notes related to topic , i done the calculations but not sure about it. request respected members to guide on this front

thanks in advance to all members

Hi,

what is the process involved ? Can you share some data , PFD or PID   with a description (philosophy) ?

My experience is about polymerization reactors for Resins production  where the solvent is

  - vaporized due to the heat generated during the reaction then

  - condensed in 1 tubular condenser , sometimes a 2nd to prevent emissions outside and

  - recycled back to the reactor .

Cooling on the main HX is cooling water and refrigerated or chiller water on the secondary condenser (if any) .

Then, attach your calculations and let us peer review it.  That sure would save time.

Thank u sir for prompt reply , actually as u correctly mentioned it is a polymerisation process where the solvent added to reactor due to exothermicity of the reaction gets evaporated which is further recovered in the overhead condensor above the reactor.  The solvent enters at room temp to reactor and further it reaction temp is maintained around 90 deg c and the evaporated solvent is condensed in the condensor.where CW is used as utility in condensor

Is it batch, semi-batch, or a combination of both?  A simple PFD would be wonderful to get everyone on the same page.  Attach/summarize your calculation results.  Then, our advice will be much more informed.

I use Process Heat Transfer by Kern as a reference.

Hi,

To add to latexman's comments and requirements , similar to mine by the way , is your design based on a pilot test ?  Do you intend to scale up a pilot batch to an industrial batch ?

Do you have data to support like evaporation rate ? this is key to design your condenser .

Thanks to grab the info and share them with us.

Hi,

As others members have indicated more details will be very much appreciated and allow everyone to provide better guidance.

Batch reactor overhead condenser design is an heat balance problem. you need to determine the maximum heat flow rate to the reactor from the jacket/limpet utility (U*A*dT); based on the same we will have the max vaporization rate. The condenser should be able to manage this load.

Size your condenser to take care of this load.

Best Regards

There sir it is batch reactor, due to some confidentiality clause i am unbale to share the details sorry for inconvenience . In initial sizing what should be the reference valve of U to be considered , to get the 1st trail  surface area. Vaporization rate is based on the total heat generated in reactor which when divided by the latent heat gives the vaporization rate correct me if i am wrong on this part .

Dear sir ,

thank for immediate reply , it is a existing  industrial reactor no any pilot plant is involved for this, purpose of this sizing is validate the existing condenser . Can u provide guidance on evaporation rate calculation & U consideration . It is a polymerization reaction

Hi,

I'm not sure I understand your question with the lack of information given .

To evaluate the evaporation rate , you have to consider the existing condenser and perform heat balance , assuming the flow rate of cooling water , the temperature difference on the water side and then you will get the heat duty . From that you can calculate the maximum evaporation by dividing the condenser duty by the latent heat of the solvent .

Overall heat transfer coefficient for condensing  organic vapor / water : 250-750 W/(m^2*C) . A search on Internet should confirm the figures.

Hope others can support in a better way .

Good luck
