Good day,

There may not be a straightforward answer to this. Typically, fire protection requirement is determined based on:

1. Local Regulations

2. Analysis of Fire and Explosion hazard

3. Analysis of local condition (exposure to adjacent properties)

4. Availability of fire department or mutual aid response.

I remembered a discussion in NFPA 30, Chapter 22.8 that for vertical atmospheric fixed roof storage tank (Class-I Fluid) larger than 190 m3 requires a fire extinguishing system if located in a congested area where there is a risk of escalation from on to the storage tank.

So, they are provided if risk warrants the provision and/or the local regulation requires the system to be installed.
