The Chemical Engineer's Book Corner

coverHandbook of Corrosion Engineering

Author(s): Pierre R. Roberge
Publisher: McGraw-Hill

Bottom Line:  Corrosion engineering is a science that really needed a great book.  Now it's here.  Find just about anything that you'd want to know about nearly every material used in the industrial world.   Getting the right material for the right job is key to a successful engineering job, this book will certainly help.

Summary:  Corrosion cost the chemical processing industry money and sometimes even lives.  This reference provides vast insight into the world of industrial materials.  All types of corrosion are addressed and the science behind them revealed.  With so many factors contributing to corrosion, a one stop reference like this one makes for a nice addition to any library.

The book is divided into the following main sections:
Introduction
Aqueous Corrosion
Environments
High-Temperature Corrosion
Modeling, Life Prediction, and Computer Applications
Corrosion Failures
Corrosion Maintenance Through Inspection and Monitoring
Acceleration and Amplification of Corrosion Damage
Material Selection
Protective Coatings
Corrosion Inhibitors
Cathodic Protection
Anodic Protection
Appendix

Layout:    The selection of sections seems to make sense.  References are included at the conclusion of each section.   Tables are easy to read.  Index is a bit thin.  The appendix includes a wealth of additional information that the reader will find useful.

Highs:     Acts very much like a corrosion engineering bible.  Find decades of experience and know-how in one reference

Lows:     The material recommendations are sometimes left a bit too vague

Overall:     Certainly a book worth owning.  If you're often times involved in selecting materials of construction in an industrial setting, this book is a must-have.  The book does a great job of thoroughly covering a very expansive topic.
