The Chemical Engineer's Book Corner
Author(s): The late Robert H. Perry and Don W. Green
Summary: "Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook Platinum Edition" includes the seventh edition of the famed print edition used by chemical engineers all around the world as well as a new electronic edition that is put together beautifully. The electronic version contains the full text and intricate tables and charts are presented via a small add-on for Adobe Acrobat that actually allows for more accurate reading of the charts. Just when you thought that this book could not get better, it has! The book is divided into the following main
sections:
As has been the case for years, the book contains countless graphics, tables, and photos to enhance the learning experience. This book is easily the most comprehensive source of information for chemical engineers ever put on paper and now in an electronic format. Layout: After several editions of Perry's, the editors have found the recipe for presenting a vast amount of information in a format that is easy to use. Each section contains it's own set of nomenclature at the beginning of the section. Equations and tables are labeled according to section which makes communicating location of the information very effective. The electronic edition is essentially an Adobe Acrobat form of the book. The real advantage is that the electronic version can be put on a laptop that is smaller than the print version! Below is a screenshot from the electronic version.
From the Book:
Highs: Simply put, Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook is probably the one book that any chemical engineer would have a very hard time living without. The updates and additions in this edition include new technologies introduced in equipment design and many other worthy additions. With every edition, this book gets better and better. Lows: It's hard to find much fault with the Handbook, we'd like to see a section on finding information related to chemical engineering on the internet as it's become such a popular medium for information exchange. Subsequently, The Chemical Engineers' Resource Page has drafted a communication to the chief editor volunteering to head a collaborative effort to add such a section. Overall: The overall impression is again quite simple....if you don't have this book and you're a chemical engineer, it's hard for many of us to imagine how you've survived. If you have an older edition, you can now consider this edition a very worthy upgrade and the electronic version is pleasure to use. Rating: Star Guide:
