Finding the Specific Gravity of Slurries

   Slurries represent a mixture often encountered in the chemical process industry.  Predicting physical properties of slurries is difficult due to their composition.  One approximation that can be used to estimate the specific gravity of a slurry is shown below:

Example:
    Calculate the specific gravity of a 37 wt % slurry.  The specific gravity of the solid is 4.27 and the specific gravity of the liquid is 1.12.  Assume a 100 kg sample.

SG (slurry) = 1.54
