Find values for the ethanol-water Van Laar constants "A" & "B" experimentally at 1 atm using

1. The azeotropic mixture only and

2. x-y data over a broad range of compositions.

Determine which method is more accurate for predicting VLE at low ethanol concentrations approx of .1M

Could any one help me on this problem so that i can get started, i know some of it how to use azeotropic mole fraction and use it to find van laar constant but don't know how to find azeotropic mole fraction of ethanol and water.

but don't know how to find azeotropic mole fraction of ethanol and water.

If it isn't given as part of the problem, that is something you'll need to look up. If internet sources are allowed, you will find it very quickly using your favorite internet search engine. As one of the most studied binary systems, I would also expect that data to be presented in any number of texts.

An excellent site, that allows completely free access, for this sort of data is the Korea Thermophysical Properties Database at http://www.cheric.org/kdb/

I cannot get the site menu to work in FireFox 3.6.15 under Windows, but it works in Internet Explorer. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong here I would be very grateful.

The data I always use for ethanol-water at atmospheric pressure is from Carey and Lewis. It comes from way back in 1932, but I know that many distillation columns have been successfully designed using this data. I have tested it against other data and I am happy that it is as good as what is available anywhere in the public domain. There is just one temperature point which I have found a bit suspect, but it is of little importance. I have uploaded a copy of this data. It is one of the few data sets that gives the azeotrope composition and temperature.

Another old paper which may help is

I have created VLE for Ethanol Water system using different modules very long back for my study purpose. This file was created based on azeotropic composition data. Hope this may help you.
