Is there any downside to using 316 SS in place of 304 SS? Thanks,

igasprocessingdotnet,
The only downside is the cost. SS316 is more expensive than SS304 becuse of the molybdenum content in it which provides better corrosion resistance to chlorides or in other words to salt water environments.

I don't know about elsewhere, but here in the US in the past I've found that pipe suppliers charge less for 316SS than for 304SS.
The reason for this is that the production of 316SS is more in volume and the mill runs to produce less volume of 304SS results in it having a higher price. This has motivated pipe fabricators to make 304SS a special order and thus, drive up the price. Since 316SS will do the job of 304SS and not versa-vise, the majority of stainless pipe applications are being done in 316SS.
Perhaps this may change; I don't know.
