Hello everyone ,

I would like know the reaction pattern in scrubbing of sulphur dioxide with caustic.

Is it sodium bisulhite or the sodium sulhite, which product first? Which factors help to give the second product?

How do I know the ratio of these components after the reaction?

Kindly help me out.
Thank you.

Chemical reaction of hydrogen sulfide and caustic soda is,

NaOH + H2S = NaHS +H2O

NaOH + NaHS = Na2S + H2O

H2S first reacts with NaOH giving NAHS which further reacts with one more mol of NaOH giving Na2S.

So as long as free NaOH is available, Na2S will form. When there is no free NaOH, NaHS will start forming.
