Service: Crude Oil with water

Equipment: Above ground atmospheric storage tank

Sample Tray drain of Storage Tank are to be collected in a below ground concrete tank. Concrete tank will have piping connection for connection to a Vacuum Truck for evacuating the liquids accumulated.

Query: Can we have this concrete tank inside the Storage Tank bund wall ? due to space constraints it is not possible to locate the concrete tank outside the bund wall.

Appreciate your views to the above please.

A few thoughts Rubabu,

A. You should check your "Storage and Handling" of bulk liquids code, such as "Dangerous Goods" Code/Regulation/Standard for your country.  It may place limitations on protective bund design and sizing.

B. Assuming all is ok above, then it is probably ok to do as it is going underground and therefore need not reduce the bund capacity.

C. I would suggest that the sample catch tank be designed so that it does not fill or overflow if the bund fills.  For this the concrete tank would need to be sealed and vented to above the bund wall height.

D. I can't help but feel that adding an underground tank adds risks (ground contamination) and high cost.  Perhaps other cheaper options are available, such as a very small and cheap pump with some tubing that transfers the sample tray contents (modify it and fit a small sump within this if necessary) back to the top of the main storage tank.

Rubabu,

Yes, you can have concrete pit inside the bund wall. Refer the sketch attached.
