Dhnsekaran:

You have posted as a student in the recent past and the nature of your questions certainly indicate you are one - possibly a first-year student. For those reasons, I am moving this post to the Student Forum.

The correct word you are looking for is "Vortex". A vortex - according to an English dictionary - is " a liquid having a swirling or circular motion tending to form a cavity or vacuum in the center of the circle and to draw toward this cavity bodies subject to its action". One of the peculiarities of a vortex is that it swirls in a clock-wise direction in nothern hemispherical locations and counter clock-wise in southern hemisphere sites - such as Australia. An arrangement called a vortex plate (which you can find in the internet) is placed in the bottom liquid outlet of process vessels (especially those that feed centrifugal pumps) in order to break up or eliminate this effect because it can draw in air or associated blanket gas together with the liquid drain and cause the pump to "gasify" - or lose liquid capacity. It is not used for any other purpose to my knowldge.
