Can anyone tell me where I can obtain data on the calorific value, specific heat capacity and latent heat of vaporization of Diesel, Bunker C and LPG?

Zili:

I want to emphasize that Diesel oils and Bunker C fuel oils are mixtures of many, many different hydrocarbons. Therefore, different diesel oils derived from various crude oils and from various refineries will have somewhat different physical properties.

I also want to emphasize that LPG from various refineries will have various compositions. Some LPG may be primarily propane, some may be primarily normal butane, some may contain isobutane, and some may be mixtures of propane, and butane, isobutane. Since you did not provide the compositon of the LPG, I will give you the properties of pure propane and pure butane.

Finally, I want to point out that the specific heats and specific gravities will vary with the temperature of these fuels. Also, the net heating values will be about 92% of the gross heating values.

Diesel Oil::
Liquid specific heat @ 60 °F = 0.50 Btu/lb/°F
Heat of vaporization = 140 Btu/lb = 1010 Btu/gallon
Gross heating value = 19,250 Btu/lb = 139,000 Btu/gallon
Specific gravity @ 60 °F =0.8654

Bunker C fuel oil (also known as #6 fuel oil):
Liquid specific heat @ 60 °F = 0.45 Btu/lb/°F
Heat of vaporization = 95 Btu/lb = 782 Btu/gallon
Gross heating value = 18,230 Btu/lb = 150,000 Btu/gallon
Specific gravity @ 60 °F =0.9861

Propane:
Liquid specific heat @ 60 °F = 0.59 Btu/lb/°F
Liquid heat of vaporization = 185 Btu/lb = 784 Btu/gallon @ normal boiling point
Liquid gross heating value = 21,480 Btu/lb = 91,030 Btu/gallon
Specific gravity @ 60 °F =0.508

Gas specific heat @ 60 °F = 0.39 Btu/lb/°F
Gas gross heating value = 2,500 Btu/ft3 @ 60 °F and 1 atmosphere

Butane:
Liquid specific heat @ 60 °F = 0.56 Btu/lb/°F
Liquid heat of vaporization = 167 Btu/lb = 814 Btu/gallon @ normal boiling point
Liquid gross heating value = 21,120 Btu/lb = 102,930 Btu/gallon
Specific gravity @ 60 °F =0.584

Gas specific heat @ 60 °F = 0.39 Btu/lb/°F
Gas gross heating value = 3,230 Btu/ft3 @ 60 °F and 1 atmosphere

"Data Book on Hydrocarbons", J.B. Maxwell, published 1950 by D. Van Nostrand, Inc.
"Phillips 66 Reference Data for Hydrocarbons", Bulletin 521, Phillips Petroleum, 1962
