I plan to design a corrosion protection on my offshore pipeline (32" X-65, 0.812" thickness, 170 km). My consultant advise to install a corrosion inhibitor on the pipeline (the gas has 4% CO2, small amount of H2S--it has a H2S removal on the upstream which can reduce the H2S content to 8 ppm, and 15 lb/MMSCFD water content--from the dehydration Unit). In our previous project we only use internal coating and we planned to use the same internal coating for this pipeline but the consultant advise to use corrosion inhibitor instead of internal coating.
So, is there any explanation for this because my boss prefer to use internal coating and corrosion allowance.

I assume your consultant gave you some arguments why to use corrosion inhibitor i.s.o. internal coating (maybe it is a cost issue?). If your consultant did not give arguments, you should ask the consultant...

I would think the big difference is the trade off between capital cost and operating cost.
Coating 170 km long - 36" diameter pipeline is probably fairly expensive in terms of capital cost.
Injection of corrosion inihbitor will be a very low capital cost, but you will have to be continually injecting inhibitor, which will be an operating cost.
If you are still unsure, you should have a look at the amount of corrosion inhibitor required and the cost to see what the payback period is of of doing the coating.
