Dear all,

I am currently sizing a two phase horizontal separator fitted with vane type demister for a Shell project. My reference is DEP 31.22.05.11" Gas/liquid separators - Type selection and design rule. Horizontal separator is selected due to head room restriction. To prevent liquid carryover to pipeline and the slightly waxy nature of the fluid, I've selected vane type demister. According to DEP, vane type demister is not suitable when the operating pressure is higher than 100 bar.

As my separator operating pressure is 100-110 bar, therefore would appreciate if someone can advise why vane type demister is not recommended for pressure >100bar. Is it purely because efficiency of the vane pack demister is significantly decreased or because of some other mechanical issue?

Please advise.

Not sure how good is recommendation from DEPs, but according to my personal experience vane packs should not be used at pressures above 10-15 bar because their efficiency drops substantially. If you need a reliable design, size the vessel that is big enough and install a 6" mesh pad. Nothing can beat the gravity. For a revamp design - if you are constrained by having an existing vessel that cannot be replaced - you may choose some kind of centrifugal device.
