Well from what I remember, different Inert ceramic balls have different crush strength. The smaller ones like those at 3mm may have a crush strength of about 23kg, while the larger ones of 38mm have a crush strength of about 950 kg. These again are minimum values and are determined by placing a ceramic ball between two steel plates and noting the gauge pressure at which it gets crushed. However, other than crush strength ICB's are also subjected to a variety of tests.
Normally the vendor specifies the crush strength and the licensor gives his specifications. Other tests include those for spalling and attrition tests as well. I am not too sure what your application of ceramic balls is. I would assume it depends on the application. Moreover I am also not sure what you mean by porous. I have seen ceramic balls for support, but never for adsorption.
If you can give me some more details I may be able to help you out.

We are using porous ceramic balls for NOx adsorption. Porous here means the percentage of void volume in a ball, provided for higher surface area for reaction.
I have finalised three different balls with 25 mm, 40 mm (2 section) ceramic balls for design of scrubber with 60% of porosity.
My question is:
1. What are the design factors will be taken in to consideration while estimating the crushing strength required for designed period of operation (eg. say eg 5 or 10 yrs) (Whether self weight of ball is sufficient to estimate the crushing strength or other factors such as porosity, temperature of operation should be taken into consideration)
2. How to estimate the Crushing strength of ball as a function of porosity of balls.
3. Based on crushing strength, how can I estimate the life of balls.
Is there any standards available for estimation of crushing strength.
