i'm desperate.............help me!!!!!!!!!!!
I am having a big problem. I'm working with a dynamic simulation of a hybrid distillation (batch column and membrane pervaporazione) with hysys. For the distillation batch I made a PFD hysys, but to simulate the dynamic pervaporazione I thought of writing a program in matlab!!
how can I transfer the data flow of distillate (composition and flow) from hysys to matlab and vice versa.
thanks in advance
p.s. sorry for my bad english

I am sure you could use a compiler but that would be time consuming.

What is the application? For example if the pervaporation part is producing 2 pure products (i.e. pure ethanol (i.e. 99.5wt%) on feed and pure water (99%) on permeate) then you simply use the two programs to find the optimum conditions first with the column and then with the membrane. The water in that case can be sent to waste water treatment.

in my case the membrane is used for the purification of ethyl acetate from water. water will permeate, while the fraction rich in ethyl acetate should be feed back into the column as reflux !!!!!!!!!!!!
The simulation of the batch column is made with hysys while I thought to simulate dynamic pervaporation with matlab !!!!!!!

can you have any suggestions to simulate the dynamic pervaporation in hysys??
thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

There is not a pervaporation model for Hysis; even finding one for Aspen for your application is not possible. So going with a matlab model for pervaporation is the correct decision; to incorporate this model into Aspen is too time consuming.

What I would suggest is this:

  • Fix the outlet from the top of your column using your top stream as the reflux; if ethyl lactate and water form a low boiling azeotrope this will be done for you.
  • Model the top stream separation in the pervaporation model.
  • Rebuild your simulation in hysis and instead of using your top as the reflux as a new feed stream with the composition gained from the pervaporation model.

See if you can get the results from 1 and 3 to line up.

the problem is that in my simulation the composition of feed that enter in membrane pervaporation is variable and thus also the reflux will have a variable composition !!!!!!!!....how can I do ????. .. Please help me ... I'm going crazy
thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!

I suggest you use a component splitter in Hysys to simulate the membrane. Even though the splits may vary a bit due to operating conditions, it only takes a couple of iterations to get things right. The splits can be updated by running your matlab model with the feed from Hysys, and you can do that off-line without the need to use (OLE) automation.
