Anybody know anything about waste heat boiler tube inserts called ferrules? My understanding is that they avoid heat flux on the surface of the tubes and direct it to the center region helping boiling, that's all I've been able to find.. anybody have anything else to contribute to help my understanding? are they wrapped around tubes?

Thank you,
Chrisp.

Ferrules inserts used in sulphur waste heat boilers are installed inside the tubes at the inlet flue gas tube sheet. Sulphur waste boilers use zirconium ceramic ferrules which purpose is to avoid erosion corrosion and overheating of boiler tubes inlet. At the same time tube sheets are lined with concrete refractory facing smoothly the ferrules.

Should the oulet temperature be well in excess of the inlet, can the ferrules be placed at the outlet as a protective measure?

On a flue gas waste boiler tube side, inlet temperature is always greater than outlet temperature because flue gas energy temperature is used as a heating medium to transfer temperature to the shell waterside to produce steam. For this reason ceramic ferrules are usually installed at flue gas inlet tube side.
