hi,
please explain:
Graphical representation of performance equation of CSTR/mixed flow reactor that is plot of -1/r a Vs Xa.
_Q-- In this plot, area(from o to Xa) which is above curve and below the curve is considerd.
where as in batch reactor as well as in plug flow reactor for the same graphical plot (-1/r a Vs Xa). only area under the curve is considered why?

thanks ,
best regards.

can you mention the name of the book, edition and page no?, so that we dont end up discussing two different graphs!

hi,
the graph - represents performance euation of respective reactor .
book- it will be same in all the books !.
question- (sorry for not being clear in first place)
1.the area considerd to determine time for particular conversion in case of cstr (the shaded portion is sqare).
2.for the performance equatiuon graph of batch reactor and plug flow reactor the shaded portion is only below the curve.
hope it is clear .
even you feel this is not question please answer itt will be great help.

Hi!

I'm refering to Chemical Reaction Engineering, 2nd edition, by levenspiel. Chapter 5.

Performance equation of CSTR

In this Ideal reactor model, the reaction rate and the concentration of the reactant is uniform throught out the reactor and it's not represented by any curve but by a SINGLE POINT on the graph of -1/rA Vs. XA. To calculate V/FA0, you should consider the area withing this point on the graph. The curve on this graph only represents the different conditions(of conversion and rates) at which you can run the reactor.

Performance equation of Batch and Plug flow reactor

In these ideal reactor models, the reaction rate varies with time for a batch and it varies along the length of the reactor for a plug flow. The peformance equation is represented by the curve -1/rA Vs. XA.
Therefore, to calculate the batch time or the residence time, the integral or the area under the curve for a specific conversion is considered.

Hope this explanation helps you understand.
