Dear Process Experts
Is there any written criteria to choose vessel or Atmoshperic Tank for Surge?
I think below some given volume, horizontal vessel is good and for more volume Atmoshepric Tank can be used.
Assume Vessel/Tank with ATM pressure is sufficient.
Becasue for pressurizied system we should use vessel only.

I think intensity and duration of flowrate flactuation leading to a volume dictates if a tank or vessel to be used.

For pressurized system you can use atmospheric tank provided that a control valve (LV,PV,...) being used in tank inlet line and the tank content to be transfered to destination by a pump.

Assume I have a plant with capacity A (m3/hr).
I need to install a surge vessel within inlet of the plant (Unit).
Based on required surge time and capacity of the plant I need some volume.
I think for small volume I can use horizontal vessel.
And for Large volume I should use storage.
But what is limiting factor for such decision:
For example 200 m3, 100 m3 or any other written criteria?

By definition, a surge drum is a vessel/tank with a given volume that provides residence time for the fluid passing through.

I have never heard of such a limitation based on surge volume for using a tank or vessel as surge drum. I think, in the case of surge drum in pressurized system, that it should be a pressure vessel (normally horizontal), and if it can operate at atmospheric pressure it would be an atmospheric tank.

Dear Fallah
I have hydrocarbon condensate!
Therefore atmospheric tank, floating roof, and Vessel with blanketing can be used.
