All,

i have some questions regarding to the ISA format or the "rule" of how to draw a P&ID.

for example, if a pipe line crosses two P&ID pages, where the pipe exits the first page should match up where the pipe enters the second page. also if a process line is initiated from a equipment on the second page and pointed to another equipment in the first page, it has to enter the first page from the right side of the page.

i am not sure if you understand what i am saying, but plz help me out. i kind of remember that i have seen some articles talking about these kind of rules or format for P&ID drawings, but i couldn't find it now.

Jack

Hi marshan2000

you can refer to

PIP PIC001
Piping and Instrumentation Diagram
Documentation Criteria

ISA, is only apply for the instrumentation system such as the symbol tagging and identification
you can try to google it, I remember the sample of the document is available for download (free)

There are no "rules", regulations, "standards", or "codes" regarding the preparation and drawing of a P&ID. You simply use your common sense to produce a clear, accurate, concise, and understandable document that conveys all the piping and instumentaton related to a given process.

NO ONE - and that includes the Instrument Society of America (ISA) - has any jurisdiction over the quality or production of P&IDs.

Simply organize your P&ID so that is accurately and conveniently readable and does not confuse the reader.

That is what everyone else tries to do.

My book has some advice on this topic. I'm attaching several pages. See also the article, "Designing a Process Flowsheet," in the May 2009 issue of Chemical Engineering Progress.

When you have continuation of process line spilling to next sheet you can have a line designation marked there in- which is common.Refer Ludwig (author) for line designation symbols etc
