Syngas or Syn Gas are acronyms for Synthetic Gas. There are a great many different Syngases. For example: syngas from coal gasification, syngas from biomass pyrolysis, syngas from municipal solid waste, syngas from steam reforming of methane (for ammonia production), and many others. In general, syngases are composed primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, perhaps some methane, and possibly small amounts of other components (hydrogen sulfide, phenolics, etc.).

No, offgas and syngas do not have the same meaning. Offgas is generalized term for the gas produced by any process, reactor or even a distillation tower.

For example, the uncondensed gas from the overhead reflux drum of a distillation tower might be referred to as an offgas. If some process unit produces liquid products plus a by-product gas, that gas might be referred to as an offgas. Any gases that are vented from a process unit might also be called offgases.

Syngas, on the other hand, is a gas that is produced (from a non-gaseous feedstock) for a specific use such as a low-btu fuel gas or as a gas which can be processed to produce a specific end-product (such as the hydrogen-rich syngas used to produce ammonia).

DEAR Hiha

syngas isthe product of reaction between CH4 and steam or other gases for example CO2 THAT is rich in H2.and this gas (CO+H2) that is rich in H2 is used for ammonia production(H2+N2-----NH3).but offgas is the light product in any chemical process that is stripped from the top of vessels thst are used for stripping.for example in arefinery (C1+C2+H2+.....)can be named as offgas .so off gas is not a special gas but is a name for light products.
