Hi,

I am an Undergrad currently doing my intern in Gharda Chemicals Ltd. Panoli unit in the Project department. I had been given a task to design a distillation column for the recovery of the solvent used for further processing. It is a Packed Bed column. The feed consists of two components namely water and DMAC.

I need to design a column that gives maximum boil up rate and also maximum purity. I have been told that the flow rates are decided based on the boil up rate but I don't know how. Also, unless I know the flow rate, I wont be able to calculate the mass transfer coefficient needed to calculate the Height of Transfer units.

I dont know the overall Heat transfer coefficient as well. How do we calculate LMTD in such cases (eg. when the boiler is being used)?

I have never designed this kind of a column before and hence am finding it very difficult to use the basic principles and do the calculations. Hence, Please guide me about how I should go about designing this solvent separation unit.

Thank You

Thank you very much. I also want to know as to how should I proceed after calculation of the boil up rate.

After gathering all the informations about the products, the splits , you will have to talk to vendors of packing materials , let you contact Sulzer representative in your area .
Hope this helps
