Dear Members,
The Gas leakages from the cylinder packings is inevitable in Reciprocating Compressors. The rate of leakage depends upon the surface finish of the piston rod, the finish of the packing cups butted in the cylinder head assembly. The gas leakage paths in packing assembly is through:
1. Gasket seal towards the cylinder pressure side
2. The leakages in packing boxes
3. The leakages in rod to inner diameter of packings
The leakages of gas across the packings has to be minimized using good engineering practices in design, right choice of material of construction of packings and ofcourse the mating contacts to have a better surface finish.

My question is:
1. Is there any mathematical formulae to calculate the packing blow
2. Is there any reliable instrumentation availabe to measure the packing blow.
The debate on this subject is invited from across the board including the packing manufacturers.
