The problem with designing a flame arrestor is not with the technical aspects, but with the legal ones. Technically it is simply a matter of removing or absorbing sufficient heat for a sufficient period to get the vapor to below its burning temperature. But your insurance and statutory legal compliance issues will require that your flame arrestor has been proven to do its job and is certified by a recognized body.

The result of this is that you specify, rather than design, a flame arrestor. If you look on the web sites of suppliers of flame arrestors (such as that already given by Breizh) you will find specification sheets which show the information required. This would cover process conditions such as vapor compostion, flow rate, temperature and pressure as well as mechanical aspects like material of construction, flange standard etc. You should even specify the certification that you require to satisfy your insurers and statutory bodies.
