Dear all,

Iam doing proposal engineering for a 122.5 MW power plant.

In this regard i would like to know how to do Heavy Fuel Oil Tank Sizing.

The following is the data given by the Client:

The plant is completely Heavy Fuel Oil fired except for startup and ignition.

Two (2) Heavy Fuel Oil tanks with a total storage capacity for for one (1) day of continuous load operation are required.

If any further information is required please kindly reply.

Please let me know what should be the capacity of tanks required and also the procedure of how to size the tanks.

arkae,

You haven't provided the most important data which is the 'Heavy Fuel Oil' consumption rate as volumetric or mass flow rate.

We cannot provide any guidance unless you provide this essential data.

Regards,
Ankur.

Fuel oil consumption of the power plant is needed, as requested by Ankur. Meanwhile following notes may be useful, as an introduction to the subject.
  • In the (improbable) case that fuel oil consumption is not yet specified (such cases can be rarely met here during proposals) it can be estimated from (assumed) power plant efficiency (conversion rate to electricity) and heating value of the fuel oil to burn.
For instance, in case that power plant efficiency (based on LHV of oil) is 40% and fuel oil LHV =9500 kcal/kg, consumption is 122.5*1000*860/9500/40% = 27724 kg/h = 27.7 ton/h, so you need two tanks of total net capacity 27.7*24 = 665 ton fuel oil. In case that (electrical) efficiency is based on HHV, HHV of oil should be used.
If specific gravity of fuel oil (at storage temperature) is 0.94, each of the two tanks would have a volume of approximately 665/0.94/2/0.85=416 m3 (assumed up to 85% full).
This is a preliminary size, usually some margin is added. It is noted that a power plant of 122.5 MW nominal capacity can go higher, efficiency during operation can be lower, timing of fuel refilling every day may not be exact, etc.
  • Useful hints for the design can be found in the forum at the links

    http://www.cheresour...__1#entry51358 , as well as at http://www.cheresour...__1#entry51359 .
Above data is rather for tanks of bigger capacity, but still useful for you. Taking a representative stored fuel oil temperature would not be quite difficult for small tanks (see links).
We ordered single daily fuel oil tanks for boilers, cylindrical, size 40-50 m3, working without apparent problem. Heating by steam is externally, sort of steam tracing, to avoid the risk of roll over. Electrical tracing could be also used.

Dear sir,

Thank you very much for your reply. what you said is exactly correct.we calculated fuel oil consumption rate based on the energy required to convert the feed water to steam(provided by the customer).

Once again thank you for providing valuable information.
