1. Theoretically, odd passes can be used
2. Practically, from construction, installation and maintenance view point, even number is prefereable
3. Take note that the inlet and outlet for odd passes is on the opposite end.

Hello,

Those are good comments by S. Amhad.

1. One tube pass floating heat or pull thru heat exchangers are rare and tend to leak at the floating head end if packing is used. I have never seen three or more odd number of tube passes in this type of heat exchanger.
2. Odd number of tube passes is out of the question for u-tube heat exchangers.
3. There are many fixed tube sheet heat exchangers with one tube pass. In the years that I have designed and rated heat exchangers I have seen only several three tube pass units.
