I am in need of some help. I am an undergraduate sophomore majoring in chemical engineering, and I am working on a presentation for the uses, types, and construction of furnaces for a chemical process. Though, for the life of me I cannot find a piping & instrumentation diagram for a furnace, and I am unsure of what exactly they require to operate safetly and in check, as we are just now getting into the design of plants, hense the project. Can anyone provide me with a P&I diagram for a furnace? Better yet, any other information that may be helpful?... I keep coming across blast furnaces for steel mills and household oil burner systems when I research.
As of now, I have the basic components and simple construction and rundown of a heat-exchanger type furnace, which I just modeled in 3ds MAX. Perhaps some of the common formulas used when working with a furnace in a process may also be helpful...

P&IDs contain proprietory information and are therefore normally not given to students etc.
Maybe following link can be useful: http://www.driedger...._fh/CE5_FH.html it explains a lot about control and safeguarding of a fired heater.
Uses of furnaces in chemical process are endless, but maybe you can focus on one important application: ethylene cracking heaters. Just do a Google search on "ethylene cracking heater" and you find many useful hits...

Pages 9-59 through 9-73 of my 6th Edition of Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook are devoted to fired process heaters and to fired steam generators. Those pages include drawings of various types of fired heaters and large steam generators. Perhaps the information in those pages would be of some help to you. Your university library probably has a copy of Perry's Handbook.
