Hi, good day to everyone.

I'm a new engineer assign to our powerplant and I have inqueries regarding the caustic corrosion in boiler systems.

According to various sources, there are three conditions that must exist in order for caustic corrosion to occur.

1. Free caustic in the water

2. Specific condition of stress

3. Mechanism for concentration

My question is regarding the 1st condition. Can sodium ion (Na+), present to the boiler feed water system, possibly cause caustic corrosion?

Given that the boiler feed water pH is around 8-9, will the sodium ion react with the hydroxide ions in the water to form caustic and ultimately cause corrosion?

For the third condition, is the concentration mechanism applicable only to free caustic in the water or does it also apply to sodium ions?

Thank you in advance and best regards.
