What is the diff. between Single Wall and Double Wall Atmospheric NH3 Storage Tanks regarding safety issues? I have found two references regarding this point.

1. According to Ammonia Storage:Selection and Safety Issues; G S Lele,Chemical Industry Digest, May 2008: "These designs (single wall) have been used in some plants which have been located far away from populated areas due to safety reasons."

2. According to the Fertilizer Manual, Ref: 36.091.subject.05.25-1.File.2010.issue Date: 99/12/2010. UNIDO and IFDC: "The double-wall tank provides a secondary containment feature for added safety".

So it is obvious there is no restriction of constructing a single wall tank in an Ammonia-Urea complex. For a LSTK project the General Contractor will go for a single wall design for financial reasons.

I need your comments.

For those interested, I submit a copy of the paper from Lele. Anyway, you have to perform a safety review (hazop) and take into account all the scenarios. Check the regulations in your country.

In case of leaks you need to simulate the consequence for the surrounding population (a dispersion model) .

Note : The cost between a simple wall and a double wall should not be the driver; a lot of prevention means should be included in the project.

Others may have different opinion .

Hope this helps
