Khaled:
I will assume that you are asking about the disulfide oils produced as a byproduct from a petroleum refinery Merox unit removing mercaptans from propane or butane. The reactions taking place in such a unit are:
mercaptan extraction reaction:
2RSH + 2NaOH ==> 2NaSR + 2H2O
2 mols mercaptan + 2 mols caustic ==> 2 mols sodium mercaptide + 2 mols water
caustic regeneration reaction:
2NaSR + 0.5O2 ==> RSSR + 2NaOH
2 mols sodium mercaptide + 0.5 mol oxygen ==> 1 mol disulfide oil + 2 mols caustic
the overall reaction:
2 RSH + 0.5O2 ==> RSSR + H2O
Many refineries dissolve the disulfides in a small amount of naphtha to separate and remove the disulfides from the regenerated caustic.
