Hi,

I am trying to design a Adsorption Column for Wastewater treatment. But am struggling. Could someone please tell me if there are any rules or formulas that i could use or follow. Some references will be very helpful as i will need to justify my choices.

Thank you

I forgot to mention that this is supposed to be of Pilot-Scale.

Hi Breizh,

I have tried looking through the forum but i have not been able to find what I am looking for. I have not had much experience with Adsorbers. Would it be more beneficial if i give you some more details.

Pilot-Scale Adsorber
Contact times to be tested - 1-30 minutes
Media Type : Polymer coated with Ferric Particles
Influent concentration : 4-7 mg litre

Ahsan10:

You must be specific when discussing an adsorption Unit Operation.

What, specifically, are you adsorbing from your “wastewater”? Knowing what it is that you want to separate, you then start to search for an appropriate adsorbent that will do the job for you. In the real world, we go to the “experts” – the manufacturers of the adsorbents. They will tell you if they have the proper adsorbent for the job. In your case, if you are a student, you go to the literature and search for similar cases and seek what was applied in those instances – and with what success. Obviously, the best, fastest, and surest way to solve an adsorption application is to have the services of an adsorbent manufacturer. There are years of research and study that go into the manufacture and application adsorbents. You, obviously, are no expert; neither are we. That’s why you use the common sense formula: go to those that know.

hi Art Montemayor,

I am adsorbing Phosphorus from wastewater and i already have an adsorbent. I have to size the bed and column. I have been reading a lot on Adsorption, and have come across a range of sizes for different applications, but my professor wants Justification for the chosen sizes which is where i am struggling. Which is why i asked for sources. I need things like Rules of thumb or formulas.

Hi breizh,

I have been on google for the past two days, no luck.

The document u have shared is useful but again it does not help design the pilot scale column.

Like i mentioned what i think i probably need is rules of thumb or a set of formulas which use the initial conditions or results from equilibrium and kinetic labs.

If you have searched our Forums, have you located a document called "How to Guide" on Adsorption design that I uploaded?

Hi,

I have already been through tht presetation Breizh, thanks though.

I talked to a few people about the design and they seem to suggest that the design is influence by the amount of water one wants to treat. Any educated gues for a Pilot Plant ?

Regards

Ahsan
