we have the following system.
The liquid diluent is stored in a storage tank at point A. We want to pump the diluent from the storage tank at point A to another tank at point C. There is a valve at point B(in between point A and C). Initially, pipes and connecting hose between A and B is filled with inert gas where as pipes connecting B to C is filled with diluent. The process requires that the diluent entering point C is free of gas. Before starting filling the tank at C. it is proposed to vent the inert gas by displacing with diluent (there is a diluent pump). To do so, a degasser tank with a vent is placed between point A and B. At the start of the operation, the valve at B is closed, the diluent is pumped, the inert gas will be displaced by the diluent. the inert gas is vented, the diluent is stored in the degasser tank. when it is sure that all the inert gas is removed, the valve at B is opened and the diluent will be transferred to the tank at C.
The question is how can one calculate the time required to displace all the inert gas? is it possible to model and simulate the process in Hysys? if not what tool do you recommend to use?
(note, the pipe is not horizontal, there are bends, fittings. the inert gas is not soluble with the diluent, the mechanism of removing the gas in degasser is not flashing, it is just by displacing with diluent)
