Greetings,

Sirs, at our facility we our using MEG as anti-freezing agent . MEG is mixed with water as 36 weight %, then this glycol-water is circulated in a closed loop for heat transfer purpose .
we mix Microbiological Control Agent, and corrosion inhibition chemical to this water on regular basis .

Is there some possibility that glycol-water, while keeping in circulation for long time (say 8- 10 years ) disintegrate in methane and other components .
I am searching literature on this but could not find something solid .
Can any body in forum help me here.

Regards,
Shin

The article Breizh gave was using Methanogenic Bacteria. These specific bacteria purposefully breakdown -eth to -meth type products.

The spontaneous degradation you speak of is not possible. A ethyleneglycol-water solution is stable. It is happy where it is no matter how much time elapses. Due to the anti-microbial component you add, the only possible way to break a -C off would be the addition of large energy, or combustion.

I am not aware of any possible reactions from a corroded pipe may be though.

I use the same stuff in my car radiator. It's now been working for 12+ years.
