Hi Prashanth Nair
I am also a final year student in Chemical Engineering. Well talking about the career you should choose very much depends upon the interest you have. Talking about myself I am interested to join a designing firm, for this what I have decided is that first I take experience in the plant operations so that I can learn how the epuipments which we have studied works in real time, what are the factors that effect there operations, there toubleshooting etc etc. After getting the experience in this then I will be going towards design thing.
What I think in choosing a career, is that, in which field you have interest. Like if you have interest in computer related stuff, you can choose the computer aided design or softwares development in chemical engineering.
Now if you have interest in Envirnomental side you can choose this as a field and I think it is a very growing field and very much related to Chemical Engineers.
You can go to R&D side. Well I think chemical engineering is so vast and so interesting that you can choose any type of career. You can even go to BIOCHEMICAL Technology if you have interest in that.
You have the option to go into Food industry. So many fields are there.
Now it is upto your interest and also what kind of job you get because if there are less jobs and many Engineers then we have to sometimes choose a career which may not like to join on the first place.
I personally think that you should go to the side of engineering you have interest in, beacuse on can excel the most in the field which he like that most.
It is some of my feeling. Well I know there are so many people here which can give you very experienced based and worth reading replies, much better than mine.

I hope this may help you

Regards
Ali

I am also in Perth and am chemical engineer, and i agree to malika that there is a demand for chemical engineer, i would not call it "shortage", there are opportunities.
Cheers

Hi:
I am also a senior in chemical engineering. I will be graduating from the University of Mississippi in May. Good Luck to all of you finding a job, and if any of you have any information as to good career oppurtunites please let me know. I have taken two graduate classes: Advanced Transport Phenomena and Colloid Science, but I don't think I want to go on to grad school. If by some chance I don't get a good job oppurtunity, I guess I will go on to grad school for my masters or maybe a PhD. I have experience with Mathcad, Excel, Word, and Pro II. My proffessors for the most part have been obsessed with these programs. But, I do have to say that some of them are old school and want everything done by hand. I really don't mind either way. My e-mail address is rollins1983@yahoo.com if you have any information on a good job opprotunity.
Thanks,

Hi Malika
Suri
I am a chemical engineer with 20 yrs experience in Uranium related processing back in India upto 2004. , and later , from last two years I have been living in Australia as PR. Initially I worked for 7 months with SA Water Corporation , in Adelaide. I did HAZOPS and P&ID reviews for them. Later I moved to Melbourne to join my family there, for a JOB in ORICA Advanced water technologies. The job ended after 5months of contract. in August 2005 I did some design and Pilot plant experments for Orica.

Since last August 2005, I have been appliyng for various jobs in Water and general chemica process engineering consultancies like KBR, Sinclair Metz etc. But so far I met with no success.Do you have any suggestions ?

Suri

Malika !

As there must be several promising and experienced unemployed chemical engineers in Australia looking for suitable job/s there, would you mind telling them to grab some as mentioned by you in Perth and elsewhere in Australia including for myself in Melbourne. Could you post any leads ??
Thanks !!
